Christ Our Ransom
In Numbers 3:40-51 It talks about the Ransom of the First Born among humans. Animals would be slaughtered but people not so much. Here is our dilemma.
When God slew the Firstborn in Egypt in the process of the deliverance of His people from their bondage, He made a rule. He now owned the life of all firstborn, conceivably everywhere. But especially in Israel. He makes this distinction that they are the ones whose firstborn He is claiming. Now that might lead you the reader to think that this is a wonderful thing. God is choosing firstborns for Himself. But there is at this point already established a priesthood under Aaron. So is this a good thing? Actually for the firstborn this is not such a good thing. Consider that all firstborn not just humans but animals are also claimed by God. So what does He do to the animals? What did He do to the Egyptians? Turns out firstborns are DEVOTED FOR DESTRUCTION. They are a Sacrifice unto God. Animals are to be humanely slaughtered. But people?
So how to get around your law God? RANSOM. Someone can redeem or Ransom their child for a price. In this case we have an en mass amount of firstborns forty years after leaving Egypt. We also have the Levites, ALL the Levites. THEY are the ransom.
40 Then the Lord said to Moses: “Number all the firstborn males of the children of Israel from a month old and above, and take the number of their names.
41 And you shall take the Levites for Me—I am the Lord—instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the livestock of the children of Israel.”
42 So Moses numbered all the firstborn among the children of Israel, as the Lord commanded him.
43 And all the firstborn males, according to the number of names from a month old and above, of those who were numbered of them, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.
44 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
45 “Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock. The Levites shall be Mine: I am the Lord.
46 And for the redemption of the two hundred and seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel, who are more than the number of the Levites,
47 you shall take five shekels for each one individually; you shall take them in the currency of the shekel of the sanctuary, the shekel of twenty gerahs.
48 And you shall give the money, with which the excess number of them is redeemed, to Aaron and his sons.”
49 So Moses took the redemption money from those who were over and above those who were redeemed by the Levites.
50 From the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, one thousand three hundred and sixty-five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary.
51 And Moses gave their redemption money to Aaron and his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.
Five Shekels for each person who had no personal ransom of a Levite in their stead. But the Levites are serving God. He cant destroy them. They become a ransom.
Jesus death is also a ransom from sin. Most think it is to the devil to buy us back from his ownership. Jesus dies and pays the devil. But that's not how it works. Jesus defeats the devil on his own turfs. In the wilderness, at the Temple, on the mountain, on the Cross as hanging in air. So anywhere that the Prince of this world had true dominion Jesus overcame Him as the Stronger than Strong man.
45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
1 Timothy 2:5-6
5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
6who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony that was given at just the right time.
So then the concept is this, all humanity is actually devoted for destruction Eternally, in that lake of fire reserved for the Devil and his angels. But amongst the gestalt of all that will live on the face of the Earth are those who, before the foundation of the Earth was begun, were found to be IN CHRIST.
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
4just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,
5having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
6to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
We were CHOSEN IN Jesus BEFORE anything. Science calls it a Big Bang and matter was created and then all this stuff happens and the matter becomes suitable to form worlds or The Cosmos. Then we have this world. Before any of that
we WERE IN Christ.
So we are ransomed by Jesus in the offering of Himself a sacrifice for us, once for all time. Of course the ransom is only part of the many things that the "Cross work" of Jesus performs. But it important as part of Redemption, Atonement. In the end it is all about getting back to the Father, in being Atoned for.
So that's clearer but lets look a little deeper. Lets ask the other question, the obvious elephant in the room question of why firstborn? Why choose firstborn everything to slaughter on that night in Egypt? Why then claim firstborn everything from Israel? For that matter why send the Son anyway? Why are we all so important?
Covenant. That's why.
God has made a Covenant with His own to be their God and they to be His "son".
Revelation 21:7 He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.
In the Old Testament it was this: Exodus 6:2-8
2God also told Moses, “I am the LORD.
3I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by My name the LORD I did not make Myself known to them.
4I also established My covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land where they lived as foreigners.
5Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered My covenant.
6Therefore tell the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians and deliver you from their bondage. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.
7I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.
8And I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD!’ ”
IN the Old Testament it was about a promise or an agreement on God's part to give land, land that belongs to Him for the LAND is the Lord's the whole Earth is His. Lev 25:23.
Ex 9:29, Deut 10:14, Job 41:11, Psa 24:1, 1Cor 10:26 "for “the earth is the LORD ’s, and all its fullness.”" But still why FIRST born?
How does Covenant start? With Abraham? No that's a land deal. God will be wanting to destroy civilizations that He is in foreknowledge KNOWS will defile the land that has some sort of value to Him. This concept of Covenant of I will be your God goes way beyond that. So then Moses, is where this whole Covenant starts, right? No that is where it is reiterated. This is a Deliverance issue, God needs to get His people out of a place where in they went from a family of
12 sons and a father, to a nation of 12 distinct tribal groups all identifying with a common ancestor, Jacob AKA Israel. This is tied to the Land Promise because He will go on to use these people as a scourge to destroy the civilizations that are occupying and taming the promised real estate at that hour.
So if it doesn't start here then where does it start? Genesis?
Yes .... it is tied to the fall of creation through the actions of one man. In the Creation order all the world and the plant life and animal life was created first. There would be a suitable environment for this new thing to live in and work with. Our bodies and the micro biomes of our gut etc, are made to digest the various safe edible plants and animals that abound on the planet. Consider an alien race, could they eat a Burger King Whopper? How about those fries and a shake? They would be eating the grass of the cow in its meat, the wheat of fields in the bun,
potatoes in the fries, and the ketchup is tomatoes. Let also add the cheese perhaps and now its the grass in the milk of the cow. The shake is the topper. Its all about dairy and either cacao bean or strawberry or vanilla spice. They are all plants. They grow in the soil and they derive the mineral and vitamins and are fed by the rain and sun. Aliens might not be able to live on that. But the human race is OF this world AFTER THE FLESH. So when the first human is made it is a man.
Women, go pitch your fit but not at God. God was gracious enough to create the female of the human race to begin with.
The female is made from the bone and marrow of a fully formed human, I mean why go to all the bother of another dirt heap when a rib will do? But with whom does God first speak? Both actually. He blesses both and tells them to be "fruitful and multiply.
26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”
27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth."
29Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food.
30And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth—everything that has the breath of life in it—I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
God makes humans in His own IMAGE and LIKENESS. He gives them purpose. They will rule or exercise dominion over fish, birds, livestock, even the whole Earth. An Earth said to be in its beginnings void and with form and covered in water. Gen 1:2. Look at verse 28.
..."“Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth." Reproduce and teach the next generation how to subdue the Earth. How to Rule over the animal life on the Earth. Now there was a catch. For God placed the man in this garden He had created on the Planet. A place called Eden. In that place was a tree.
Proverbs says this:
5Trust in the LORD with all your heart,and lean not on your own understanding;
6in all your ways acknowledge Him,and He will make your paths straight.
Ironically the name of the tree was The Tree of the KNOWLEDGE of good and evil. Its fruit was said to make one ..."wise"... or so the snake told the woman. Eating of the tree would perhaps indeed make one wise but, thy would be wise in their own eyes. God tells us not to be wise in our own eyes. (Prov 26:12) Because there is a price for this wisdom. (Isa 5:21, Prov 26:12, Rom 1:22) It makes for pride and removes humility from the heart and disrupts fellowship with God. Also mankind is not infinite in knowledge as is God so, famously we never know all the facts. We more often than not fail in our wisdom because we are limited in our capacity to understand. God is not so.
So she bought the lie and ate. Nothing happened. Then she gives it her HUSBAND Adam. Now here is where it gets real. What else did God do? We have a commission to tame the world to reproduce but we also have a command given, a rule, a law.
Starting here lets trace the command.
7Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
Notice that while He indeed does create human kind male and female He creates THEM. Apparently He starts with the man. (Please don't ask why... He's God He can do it however He likes).
Then we see the garden in the next verse. Gen 2:8
8And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, where He placed the man He had formed.
9Out of the ground the LORD God gave growth to every tree that is pleasing to the eye and good for food. And in the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Now we find the catch... Gen 3:15-17
15Then the LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.
16And the LORD God commanded him, “You may eat freely from every tree of the garden,
17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
This is part of the tame the world command with the Dominion over all the critters. It starts with a safe space to learn to cultivate the ground. He could eat anything from the he Garden except the one tree. WHY?! What would the "death" be anyway? Well we go from in His image and with the breath of life a Living Soul to being DEAD in transgression and Sin and Iniquity and needing JESUS. The woman gave Adam the fruit... and he ate it. He ate it knowing full well that this was not ever to be eaten... BY HIM. Where was Eve when God told this all to Adam? Nowhere to be found. For while God does indeed create male and female, He does this at separate times and via separate methodology. Adam is made from the elements of the Earth itself and those elements are bound into his living body. Bone and marrow with blood and cells in it would be all that was now required to fashion the complimentary human companion for Adam, seeing as no other creation would do. In fact if you read
the creation account you don't find God ever telling Eve... anything. But when it all goes sour how does God deal with Eve? She honestly tells God that the snake deceived her. God says nothing about the fact that there was a conversation between her and the snake at all. He curses the snake. Curses Eve's childbearing to become painful and kicks them out of Eden, lest they eat from the other very special tree and become immortal in THIS SIN. This is the SIN of BREECH OF COVENANT. Adam turned from God to a woman and disregarded the "LAW". Adam by the way is God's FIRST BORN of human creation. JESUS is God's ONLY UNIQUELY BORN SON... He is God The Son. He is first born of the dead.... Col 1:18
Every first born was always God's from the beginning and He could do as He pleased with them. But on the Pesach (Passover) He chose to sacrifice them. He chose to hold them in the bondage of the Sin of Adam, in transgression and trespass and sin and iniquity. When Jesus offers Himself as The Ransom, He receives the full weight of the bondage on Himself in OUR PLACE. Remember that before Adam exists WE ARE IN CHRIST.
Have you given any thought to this?
Think about it.
